A Fun Sit Down Convo with Jessica and Kiel Kauzlick - Owners of Sharkey's Cuts for Kids - North Fort Worth

Hey there, Jessica and Kiel! Can you believe it's been just over a year since you opened Sharkey's Cuts for Kids in North Fort Worth? Time flies, huh?

Jessica: "Absolutely! It feels like just yesterday we celebrated our Grand Opening on May 21, 2022. It's been an incredible journey so far."

So, tell us, what was the spark that got you two into this business?

Kiel: "Well, we were in the market to open a franchise, and when we first laid eyes on Sharkey's, we were smitten. The business model, the concept of the store, and the potential to bring this excitement to our community just clicked for us. We were all in after that initial presentation!"

Sounds like a great start! Now, let's dive into what makes Sharkey's special. What services or products do you offer that stand out?

Jessica: "Oh, we offer the whole package for children's haircuts! At Sharkey's, kids can choose to sit in themed cars, play Xbox, or hang out in our Glamour area. And every haircut includes a wash and blow dry. Plus, they leave with a lollipop, balloon, and a Sharkey’s tattoo. Girls get an extra treat with a complimentary "mini-cure." It's all about making haircuts fun and memorable for the little ones."

Wow, that's a lot of fun packed into one salon visit! But what really makes Sharkey's shine among your competitors?

Kiel: "Well, it's not just about the services; it's the atmosphere and customer service that set us apart. Everyone who walks through our doors is treated like family. We want kids and parents to feel comfortable and enjoy the whole experience."

That's fantastic! Now, here's a fun tidbit. What surprised you the most when you ventured into the salon industry, especially considering your backgrounds?

Jessica: "You know, it surprised many people that a 'math nerd' like me and a 'bald man' like Kiel would open a salon. We had zero experience in this industry, but we relied on the franchise's business model, and it's been quite the adventure."

Let's shift gears a bit. Tell us about your hometowns and cherished memories from your upbringing.

Kiel: "I'm from Toledo, Ohio, and one of my fondest memories was spending weekends at the lake with friends and family."

Jessica: "I'm from Mechanicsville, MD, and one memory that stands out is the father-daughter dance I had in 6th grade after cotillion class. It was a special moment."

Those sound like lovely memories! Now, how about your educational journeys?

Kiel: "I received a BA in Communications from Bowling Green University and an MS in Aeronautics from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University."

Jessica: "I earned a BS in Applied Mathematics from Towson University and later completed my MBA at Capitol College."

Impressive educational backgrounds! Can you share experiences from your younger years that shaped your paths?

Jessica: "For me, it was my 10th-grade honors algebra teacher. She ignited my love for math, which eventually led me to where I am today."

Kiel: "Joining the Air Force right after high school really shaped my life. The experiences I gained there eventually paved the way for my career in aviation."

Every business journey has its bumps. What were some hurdles you encountered when starting Sharkey's?

Jessica: "The beginning was quite rough. From construction hiccups to staffing challenges, it felt like we were facing one obstacle after another. But we persevered."

That determination surely paid off! Can you recall a moment in your business journey that fills you with pride?

Kiel: "Definitely! Back-to-school season this year was a high point. Our books were full, and our staff worked seamlessly to ensure top-notch service. It made us incredibly proud of our team."

So, what do you love most about the North Fort Worth area where you conduct your business?

Kiel: "We chose North Fort Worth because it's where we live and raise our daughter. We adore the community feel, surrounded by other small businesses just like ours."

Any pearls of wisdom for those starting their own business?

Jessica: "Plan for initial expenses to be higher than you expect, and be patient with the process. Flexibility is key when unexpected challenges arise."

Alright, let's lighten it up a bit. Where's your go-to spot to unwind in the evening?

Kiel: "Our big comfy couch! I usually watch sports, and Jessica curls up with a good book."

Sounds cozy! Lastly, where's the place you head to for a quick and delicious meal?

Jessica: "We're big fans of Saikou Sushi and Ramen. Their brussel sprouts are to die for, and you won't find better ramen in North Fort Worth."

Thanks so much, Jessica and Kiel, for sharing your wonderful journey with us. It's been a pleasure getting to know you and learning about Sharkey's Cuts for Kids - North Fort Worth. We wish you continued success in your exciting venture!
